SMRA offers Technician licensing classes to the Cumberland County area throughout the year. We teach new hams the information needed to pass the Technician exam. The classes are generally held at the Fredricksen Library in Camp Hill or the Bosler Library in Carlisle.
These classes are free to anyone who wants to learn more about amateur radio. The required reading from the ARRL Technician handbook, classroom instruction, and the VE test fee are included free of charge. Please keep an eye on this page and our Facebook page for when the next classes are coming up.
What you’ll learn
In the class you’ll learn about what it means to be an Amateur Radio operator. Including information on radio signals, electrical components, antennas, propagation, the equipment you’ll need, and much more. At the end of the course, you’ll take the test with our Volunteer Examiners (VE’s). When you pass the test you’ll also be given a membership to SMRA. This membership is good for the remainder of the year and the full following year from when you passed. You’ll also be provided your first Handheld (HT) radio, free of charge! We’ll even show you how to set it up and use it.
What does SMRA have to offer
SMRA is active in the community and we want you to feel welcome to attend one of our meeting offerings. Please join us at a general meeting or come to our Meet the Mentors meeting to expand upon the Technician basics, and learn more about what the hobby has to offer! SMRA also has an Emcomm team that works emergency communications in the area and we support the County with radio communications when called upon. We also have QRP and POTA groups who go out to operate in nature. We have a lot to offer and hope that once you pass your test, you’ll continue your radio journey with us!
