Hands-On Build Projects & Technical Training
At SMRA, we believe the best way to master amateur radio is by getting your hands dirty. Throughout the year, our Meet the Mentors (MTM) and Emergency Communications (EmComm) groups host hands-on build sessions designed to teach new skills, from basic station assembly to advanced field deployment.
What We’ve Built This Year
- Antenna Construction: MTM met in early May to build a 2m ground plane antenna that could be used with handhelds or base stations.
- APRS Balloon Project: While not an official SMRA project. Members of the club have come together to assemble an APRS Balloon that we are hoping to track around the world!
Coming Up: Future Builds
We have an exciting lineup of projects planned for the remainder of the year, with potentially more to come. Keep an eye on our website for more details!
- Fox Hunting (Directional Antennas): We’ll be building Yagi and Tape Measure antennas specifically designed for transmitter hunting and signal direction finding.
- EmComm Field Gear: Continued training on cable crimping including Coax and Powerpoles. As well as antenna builds.
